The right hike starts before the first step
Safe hiking means considering conditions, terrain and people together. Choose distance, ascent and difficulty for the least experienced person in the group, check mountain weather and current notices, and include a time reserve. Community timings and app ratings do not replace your own judgement.
Day-hike packing list
- Footwear: broken in, with a grippy tread and suitable for the terrain.
- Clothing: flexible layers plus rain, cold and sun protection.
- Food and drink: enough water and a reserve in case of delays.
- Navigation: a current map or offline app; a power bank is useful on long outings.
- Emergency: first-aid kit, emergency blanket, mobile phone and essential personal medication.
Weight and equipment should match the actual walk. An easy lake circuit and an alpine route require different preparation.
Reassess as you go
Set off at an easy pace and compare trail signs with the map at junctions. Before steeper or more remote sections, reassess time, weather and how the group feels. Wet roots, lingering snow and mud can make an officially easy route significantly harder. Turn back early when in doubt; no summit or destination matters more than a safe return.
Stay on marked paths, close gates, take litter home and respect wildlife refuge zones. Call 112 in a serious emergency.
