Late Gothic architecture above Füssen

The Hohes Schloss is one of Swabia’s important late-Gothic castle complexes. Formerly the summer residence of the prince-bishops of Augsburg, it still defines the town’s skyline. Its most unusual feature is the illusion painting on the courtyard façades: painted oriels and architectural details make flat walls appear three-dimensional.

Art in historic rooms

Inside are a branch of the Bavarian State Painting Collections, displaying late-Gothic art, and the Municipal Gallery with changing presentations. Access through the galleries also leads to the wall walk and gate tower, opening views across the old town and surrounding countryside.

Visitor note

The galleries and wall walk have seasonal opening hours and are not accessible without barriers. Tickets are sold on site. Check the current opening day before climbing to the castle.
