The Lechfall circuit is a leisurely winter hike through Füssen that offers a successful mix of scenic highlights and cultural sights. It leads through Füssen city center into the picturesque Faulenbach valley to the impressive Lechfall.
Sightseeing with a difference - on the Lechfall circuit Allgäu holidaymakers who spend relaxing days in Füssen-Weißensee during the cold months can discover some of the area's most beautiful scenic and architectural sights on a leisurely winter hike. The approximately 3,5 kilometer long tour only lasts about an hour, but it is packed with varied impressions that make the winter excursion an unforgettable experience. The starting and finishing point of the winter hike, which is also suitable for families with children and seniors, is the Tourist Information in the Füssen old town. Sturdy shoes and warm clothing are recommended as equipment. Hiking poles that provide additional stability are also useful.
First, winter hikers stroll along Reichenstrasse and pass pretty medieval houses, cute shops and cozy cafés. The first highlight of the tour is the former Benedictine monastery of St. Mang, whose origins go back to 9. century. The artfully decorated monastery church, the impressive imperial hall and the library with its extraordinary architecture are worth seeing. The St. Mang Monastery houses the city museum Füssen, which introduces visitors to the city's history and, among other things, presents a valuable collection of historical lutes and violins. The tour continues past the monastery into the idyllic Baumgarten city park behind the High Castle, which is one of the best-preserved medieval castle complexes in Bavaria and is Füssen's landmark. The branch gallery of the Bavarian State Painting Collections and the Municipal Gallery are housed in the High End.
The excursionists hike in the Baumgarten to a wooden bridge, where they follow the path towards Kobel. From here the paths are no longer cleared and lead through a wonderful winter landscape. At the next junction you turn left down to Bad Faulenbach, which is something like Füssen's natural spa park. Pretty mountainside forests, snow-covered meadows and six small lakes make Bad Faulenbach a scenic gem. The hikers walk down the Fischhaus and Schwärzerweg to the impressive Lechfall. The König-Max-Steg leads over this, offering a breathtaking view of the twelve-meter-high waterfall and the Lech Gorge, which exudes a very special charm in winter. In a niche above the gorge there is a bust of King Maximilian II, who shaped the region like no other. In front of the niche, Saint Magnus is said to have jumped over the Lech to escape from pursuers. A monument in the form of two footprints in the rock - the so-called Magnustritt - reminds us of this.
The day trippers finally march slowly along the beautiful Lech back to the Füssen old town. The numerous cafés and restaurants now invite you to take a leisurely break and round off your winter excursion with coffee and cake or a warm Allgäuer delicacy. There is really something interesting to discover at every turn on the Lechfall circuit, so everyone will enjoy this short winter hike. Great views of the snow-covered Füssen and the magnificent mountains are of course included in the tour.
