A hike to the Säulinghaus, which stands at 1720 meters on the sunny side of the eponymous Säuling, offers hiking enthusiasts the opportunity to get to know what is probably the most fascinating mountain around Füssen better. The tour impresses with great natural impressions in a beautiful mountain landscape and is suitable for anyone with a bit of fitness.
With its striking shape, which is reminiscent of a pyramid, the 2047 meter high column cannot be overlooked in the region between Füssen and Pfronten. The imposing mountain, around which many regional myths are entwined, radiates a sublime beauty and dominates the landscape in the Allgäuer Königswinkel. Hiking enthusiasts who want to get to know this mountain better can do so on a hiking tour to the Säulinghaus. The route presented here, which takes around four hours there and back, is not difficult and is suitable for anyone with a bit of fitness. However, if you want to climb the summit from the Säulinghaus, you need a head for heights and sure-footedness. The starting point for the hike to Säulinghaus is the Tyrolean village of Pflach, which can be reached in around 15 minutes by car from Füssen-Weißensee. The signposted Säulinghaus hut car park is located near the train station there. The cozy hut is open from May to October.
At the starting point of the tour, hikers follow the forest road for a short distance until they come to the sign for the Säulinghaus. A small path then leads you mostly gently uphill through a picturesque mountain landscape. The soothing mountain air, unadulterated mountain nature and ever-present beautiful views of the vast foothills of the Alps make the tour a real highlight. After about an hour, the path becomes a little steeper and hikers have to put their fitness to the test as they walk uphill in serpentines. After about 2 Stunden walking time you finally reach the Säulinghaus, which is in a fantastic location about 350 meters below the summit. Now the hiking enthusiasts have well-deserved a delicious snack in the rustic hut. You can enjoy the breathtaking view of the Lechtal and Allgäu Alps as well as the Reutten valley.
Families with children and inexperienced mountain hikers should enjoy their stay and then return comfortably to the valley. Climbing the summit is only recommended for experienced mountain hikers who are sure-footed and have a head for heights. Behind the Säulinghaus, a path leads steeply uphill through the south wall, which is secured with chains in some places. After half an hour of scrambling, the hikers reach a meadow where they can take a breath and have a picnic before continuing uphill for another half hour. When you finally reach the summit cross, a fantastic view that makes you melt away makes up for the strenuous climb. When visibility is good, the view over the foothills of the Alps extends to the Zugspitze. After an obligatory photo at the summit cross as a souvenir, the descent begins, during which caution and concentration are of course also required.
According to legend, the summit plateau of the Säuling is used by witches as a dance floor on some nights. This is just one of many legends that the locals tell about the fascinating Säuling.
