Long-distance hiking trail stages: Füssen to the Tegelberg in Hohenschwangau

On the 11,7 km long stage from Füssen to the Tegelberg in Hohenschwangau, hiking enthusiasts follow in the footsteps of the Bavarian kings and can look forward to numerous sightseeing attractions along the way as well as dream views over the vast foothills of the Alps. The stage is one of the most beautiful of the completely new long-distance hiking trail “Hiking Trilogy Allgäu”, which leads through the entire Allgäu for over 876 kilometers and at three altitudes. However, the stage is considered demanding and is therefore only recommended for experienced mountain hikers with sufficient experience and fitness.

The hiking trilogy Allgäu is a completely new long-distance hiking trail network that runs through the Allgäu on three routes and more than 876 km. The hiking trilogy differs from other long-distance hiking trails in its flexibility. This means that hikers can flexibly put together their own individual tour from the main routes and their connecting paths, depending on their own fitness level and preferences. For the hiking trilogy, the Allgäu was divided into different experience rooms, so-called trilogy rooms. In each trilogy room there are stage, theme and portal locations, each of which tells stories that are characteristic of the region. On this long-distance hiking trail, hikers also learn a lot about the culture, special features and people in the different regions of the Allgäu.

The area around Füssen is part of the “Schlosspark” trilogy area, which is primarily about the history of the Bavarian kings, who once fell in love with the wonderful landscape and had their castles built here. The stage from Füssen to Hohenschwangau leads past the most famous sights of the castle park and impresses with fantastic landscape impressions. However, since it is classified as demanding, it can only be recommended to hikers with experience in alpine mountaineering and sufficient fitness. The starting point of the stage is the Tourist Information in Füssen. The journey to Füssen is via the A7 motorway or the federal highways B310, B16 and B17. Parking is available in the P5 “City/Sparkasse” car park, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the Tourist Information. After the stage, hikers can return from Tegelberg to Füssen with the bus lines 73 and 78.

This hike is particularly attractive in autumn, when the landscape is wrapped in a colorful dress and conveys a touch of Indian summer.

From the Tourist Information, hikers walk along Augsburger Straße into the Füssener pedestrian zone. The old town of Füssen is particularly romantic with narrow, winding streets along which there are numerous medieval buildings. Cozy cafés and restaurants invite you to enjoy Allgäuer delicacies and you can browse and shop in the small shops and boutiques. After the hikers have walked past the city fountain, they keep left and walk down the Lechhalde, over the Theresienbrücke to Tiroler Straße and the church “To Our Lady”. The climb to the Füssener Kalvarienberg begins here, the summit of which is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the region. As they climb, hikers pass numerous ornate station chapels that commemorate the suffering of Jesus Christ. Fairy Tale King Ludwig II took part in 19. Century often took part in the Good Friday processions to Calvary. The view from the summit of the Füssen old town and the picturesque foothills of the Alps with the royal castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau is breathtaking.

After descending from Kalvarienberg on the other side, hikers follow the signs “Drei Schlösserweg” to Schwansee in Schwangau. This picturesque lake is located in the immediate vicinity of the royal castles. At its eastern end it goes up the Fischersteig in serpentines and then turns left onto Fürstenstraße. Here hikers turn left again to go to Hohenschwangau. In the village of the royal castles you pass the Museum of the Bavarian Kings on the banks of the Alpsee, where you can find out a lot of interesting things about King Ludwig II, his family and his castles. Shortly after the museum, turn right up to the road that leads to Neuschwanstein Castle. The hikers take the next junction and turn right to the “Youth” viewpoint and the Marienbrücke. The young people once again get great views over the Alpsee, the castles and the Allgäu mountains.

From the Marienbrücke you can marvel at the dream castle Neuschwanstein, which from the outside is reminiscent of an impressive knight's castle, up close. After crossing the bridge, the challenging climb up the Tegelberg begins, which also impresses with beautiful landscape impressions and panoramic views over the foothills of the Alps. At the top station of the Tegelbergbahn at 1720 meters there is a panoramic restaurant and the Tegelberghaus, which invite you to take a leisurely break and enjoy the well-deserved enjoyment of Allgäu delicacies. By the way, the Tegelberghaus is the former royal Bavarian hunting lodge of Maximilian II, the father of the fairy tale king. The hikers can then take the Tegelbergbahn comfortably to the valley station, from where they can take the bus back to Füssen. You can also linger for a while at the valley station, as there is a cozy beer garden, a summer toboggan run, a refreshing pedaling pool and a lot more that is worth discovering.

The stage from Füssen to Hohenschwangau, which is part of the Allgäu hiking trilogy, impresses with many sights along the way and unforgettable landscape impressions in one of the most attractive holiday areas in Germany.
