The Allgäuer Viehscheid in autumn

The Allgäuer Viehscheid in autumn

The Allgäuer Viehscheid in autumn, during which the cattle are driven from the mountain pastures back into the valley and handed over to their owners, is one of the most important customs in the region and has now taken on the character of a folk festival. Around Weissensee-Füssen, Allgäu holidaymakers can of course also experience this beautiful tradition again.

Every spring the cattle are driven to the lush green mountain meadows in the Allgäu Alps, where they spend the summer. During the so-called cattle shedding in September, also known as the Almabtrieb in other areas, the herds are artistically decorated and brought back into the valley to hand the individual animals over to their owners. This time-honored tradition is accompanied by music and dance events and has now taken on the character of a folk festival. Tourists staying in Füssen-Weißensee in September can experience the beautiful custom of cattle shedding in many places in the area and have a lot of fun at the same time. We'll show you where you can experience 2016 the Viehscheid around Weißensee.

On Saturday, 10. September 2016, a large cattle drive takes place in Pfronten / Heitlern, during which cattle, led by 15 festively decorated wreath cows, are driven back into the valley. The first animals arrive at Scheidplatz in the morning at 09:00 Uhr, where they are returned to their owners. The end of the alpine summer is then appropriately celebrated by locals and tourists in a large festival tent with hearty music, food and drink. The event is also accompanied by an interesting grocery market. A week later, on Saturday the 17. September 2016, the Viehscheid takes place in Pfronten / Röfleuten.

Also on Saturday, 17.09.2016, the Viehscheid is celebrated in the Füssen neighboring community of Schwangau. In the district of Hohenschwangau, where the famous royal castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are enthroned within a picturesque rocky landscape, cattle that have spent the summer on the Alpe Jägerhütte and the Altenberger Alm are ceremonially welcomed. Accompanied by onlookers and bands, the entourage then moves on partly to the Schwanseepark and partly to Alpe Reith. At the construction yard at Schwanseepark, the farmers later celebrate the safe return of their animals with locals and tourists.

Not far from Füssen-Weißensee is the municipality of Buching, where the Viehscheid takes place on Monday, 19.09.2016 . Accompanied by the Buching music band, the decorated cattle move into the market square at 09:30 Uhr. This event is one of the highlights of the Buchinger Autumn Festival, which begins on 17.09. and, thanks to many attractions, ensures plenty of fun for young and old. Here, visitors can haggle with shopkeepers for their goods and purchase many regional handicraft products such as carved edelweiss before heading to the festival tent, where a good mood is guaranteed thanks to the hearty brass music.

It is definitely worth getting to know the traditional Allgäuer Viehscheid during a stay in Füssen-Weißensee in September. Here you get unique insights into the customs of the region and have a lot to marvel at and have fun with. The decorated cattle are an attraction for adults and children, and the many fair stalls and stalls at the Allgäu cattle sheds ensure that there is always something to discover and there is never a dull moment.
