The hike to the 2366 meter-high Red Stone in the Lechtal Alps can easily be described as an insider tip for experienced mountain hikers. The high alpine tour is quite demanding, but also impresses with breathtaking landscape impressions and views that will make you fall down on your knees.
The starting point for the high alpine hike to the Roter Stein, which requires a head for heights, sure-footedness and fitness, is the Tyrolean village of Bichlbächle, which can be reached in half an hour's drive from Füssen-Weißensee. The approach is via the A7 in the direction of Reutte / Fernpass to Bichlbach. There you drive towards Berwang and after about two kilometers turn off to Bichlbächle. There are parking spaces on the right behind a river bridge. The tour takes around six hours and should not be attempted in rain, snow or fog. In addition to hiking boots with good tread soles and weatherproof clothing, you should also think about having enough provisions, as there are no places to stop for refreshments along the way.
From the parking lot, hikers follow the signpost to the Roter Stein and initially walk along a farm path along the Stockachbach. The path markings then lead the hikers in serpentines through a beautiful mountain forest up to the Bichlbächler Jöchle on 1943 meters. On the way there are always wonderful views of the north side of the Rote Stein massif and many other mountains in the Lechtal Alps. Hiking enthusiasts walk on the flat Jöchle to a fork in the road, where they turn right to continue the tour on the south side of the Schafsköpfle.
Past scree slopes and through mountain pine, the tour leads to another fork in the road, where you turn right again. The hikers fight their way further up in serpentines and always orientate themselves on the signposts and red markings that have been placed on stones. Below a steep scree slope on the left side, an intermediate height is finally reached before heading to the summit massif opposite. The last part of the climb is very steep and is partly secured with steel cables. Surefootedness and a head for heights are required here. After hiking enthusiasts have reached the summit and are standing next to the summit cross, they are presented with a fantastic view of countless mountains that will certainly remain unforgettable.
The way back is on the same route or alternatively via the west side into the Älpeletal and then in a northerly direction until just before Berwang. At the end of a forest road, hikers turn right and walk along the Talbach, past Berwang, to a road. Here you turn right again to return to Bichlbach and the starting point. Since the alternative route is longer and difficult to walk when wet, it is recommended to take the same route as the outbound route.
The varied mountain tour to the Rote Sein impresses with many great natural impressions and fantastic views. Except for a few challenging passages, such as the steep climb to the summit, it is largely comfortable, so that hikers can enjoy the enchanting mountain landscape with all its facets to the fullest. The tour is definitely something special and offers the opportunity to get to know the Tyrolean mountains far off the beaten tourist path. Anyone who feels like going on a mountain adventure while on vacation in Füssen-Weißensee will get their money's worth on the hike to the Roter Stein.
