The Hohe Straussberg near Schwangau

The Hohe Straussberg near Schwangau

The Hohe Straußberg is a 1933 meter high mountain near Schwangau, which is part of the Ammergau Alps. It can be easily reached on a demanding bike & hike tour, where great landscape impressions and views over the foothills of the Alps are guaranteed.

If you fancy a challenging mountain adventure during your holiday in Füssen-Weißensee, you can take a tour to the 1933 meter-high Hoher Straußberg near Schwangau. This leads through a wonderful Allgäuer mountain landscape, but also requires good fitness and sure-footedness. The tour is ideal as a bike & hike activity, i.e. a mixture of mountain bike and hiking tour, but can also be completed entirely on foot. If you want to make it as easy as possible, take the bus from Hohenschwangau to the Bleckenau mountain inn and start the climb from there on foot. If you decide to cover part of the route by mountain bike, you first go from Weißensee to Hohenschwangau. Since the climb to Hoher Straußberg is partly not signposted, it is best to take a map of the region with you. Good hiking boots and weatherproof clothing are also recommended.

From the Tourist Information Hohenschwangau, excursionists simply follow the signs to the world-famous Neuschwanstein Castle and Marienbrücke. If you do the tour before 8 Uhr in the morning, you can still use the tarred shuttle bus route; later this is closed to bicycles and you have to follow the steeper cycle path. Near the Marienbrücke bus stop, the so-called water pipe path branches off to the right from the asphalted road. This takes you along a mountain river through a beautiful mountain landscape to the Bleckenau mountain inn. Alternatively, follow the road to Bleckenau. You can park your bike there and fortify yourself with a Bavarian snack for the rest of the tour. The Bleckenau mountain inn is the former hunting lodge of Fairy Tale King Ludwig II and is now a popular stop for hikers and cyclists. In a rustic atmosphere there are all sorts of Allgäuer delicacies that can be enjoyed while enjoying the view of the mountains.

The further route to the summit of the Hoher Straußberg requires some sense of the route. If in doubt, let the local staff at the Bleckenau mountain inn describe the route in detail. First follow the wide path that leads to the restaurant straight ahead. After about half an hour, you cross the river in a shallow place at the level of a trail on the left. A red marking shows you that you are on the Settele-Steig, which takes you in a good hour in serpentines to the summit of the Hoher Straußberg. There is a breathtaking view of the Allgäu foothills of the Alps with its meadows, lakes and magnificent mountains.

The way back is on the same route. If you didn't start by mountain bike, you can simply follow the signs from Hoher Straußberg to the Tegelberg mountain station. There, a panoramic restaurant invites you to a well-deserved refreshment before you take the Tegelbergbahn comfortably down into the valley.

The charming tour to the Hoher Straußberg offers genuine enjoyment of nature, far away from the well-trodden tourist paths in the Allgäu mountains. For all sporty Allgäu holidaymakers in Füssen-Weißensee with a bit of a sense of adventure, this tour is a real pleasure.
