A great excursion destination at any time of year: Lake Hopfensee
The Hopfensee, which belongs to the municipality of the romantic Ostallgäu town of Füssen, is considered one of the warmest foothill lakes in the Alps and is a great excursion destination at any time of year. It is surrounded by green meadows and forests as well as the magnificent Allgäuer mountains and enables numerous sports and leisure activities. On its northeastern shore lies the Kneipp and climatic health resort of Hopfen am See, which is also called the “Riviera of the Allgäus” due to its Mediterranean flair.

With its clean, quickly warming water and gently sloping banks, it is particularly popular in summer with families with children, who can relax on cozy lawns in the Hopfen lido and enjoy wonderful swimming fun and the view of the Alpine peaks. The lido also offers its visitors the opportunity to play beach volleyball, table tennis and mini golf. A playground and a sandpit ensure lots of fun for the kids. Changing cabins, showers and deck chair and parasol rental complete the lido's offerings. Furthermore, the Hopfensee is ideal for leisurely trips on pedal boats and rowing boats, where you can look forward to wonderful views. Anglers pursue their hobby here in the middle of an idyllic natural landscape and the water is a top address for surfers due to its favorable wind conditions. Even in the cold season, the Hopfensee is very popular with locals and tourists. Then you can go ice skating on it and have fun with the cult sport of curling.
The area around the Hopfensee is also a real highlight for hikers and cyclists. To get to know the lake and the Kneipp and climatic health resort of Hopfen on the north-east bank, which impresses with its southern flair and a magnificent Alpine panorama, you can take a leisurely walk on the Hopfensee circular path. The ideal starting point for this is the waterfront promenade in Hopfen am See. Here you can stroll wonderfully and be enchanted by the sight of the mountains reflecting in the water and the view of the royal castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. Cozy restaurants and cafés invite you to linger here and spoil their guests with delicious Allgäu delicacies. The path around the lake, which is flat and is also suitable for older people and children, takes about an hour and a half through a fantastic natural landscape. The walkers walk in soothing air, along green meadows and forests with intact flora and fauna.
Here and there grebes, coots and other water birds can be observed in the reed area. If you want, it's worth taking a detour to the Hopfen castle ruins, which are located on a hill above the town. Although only remains of the wall remain from the oldest stone castle in Allgäu, the view from here of the Ammergau Alps and the Tannheim Mountains is phenomenal and unforgettable. Of course, the Hopfensee circular trail can also serve as a starting point for hikes to other attractive destinations in the area.
