The musical Ludwig² is dedicated to the life of King Ludwig II, who is popularly known as the fairy tale king. The monarch, affectionately known in Bavaria as “Kini” (Bavarian: King), made a name for himself primarily as a passionate castle builder. He had the Herrenchiemsee, Linderhof and Neuschwanstein castles built, which are now world-famous and often visited attractions. Above all, the Neuschwanstein castle, which stands in a wonderful mountain landscape at Füssen, delights well over a million people from all over the world every year with its beauty and splendor. Numerous books, films and documentaries are dedicated to the mysterious life of Ludwig II, who was considered a dreamy idealist and who loved the romantic fairy tale world, the arts and music. However, as King of Bavaria, he had to deal with conflict, intrigue, suffering and destruction during a difficult time. Internally torn by the contrast between his enthusiastic world view and the bitter reality, Ludwig II took refuge in the dream worlds of his castles and withdrew more and more from people over time.
