Winter hike around Lake Weissensee

Winter hike around Lake Weissensee

Allgäu holidaymakers who spend a few relaxing days in the idyllic Füssen district of Weißensee during the cold months can get to know the body of water of the same name on a varied winter hike. This offers great impressions of nature, spectacular views and even a bit of cultural enjoyment.

The picturesque Weißensee, which lies in the middle of the rural Füssen district of the same name, covers an area of 1,35 square kilometers and is a popular destination for nature lovers and those seeking relaxation at any time of the year. In the cold months it invites you to take a varied winter hike along its banks, which takes place without much effort and offers a wealth of beautiful holiday impressions. The approximately six kilometer long circular tour takes about an hour and a half and runs along signposted, paved paths. While these are cleared and chipped on the north bank, they are left natural on the south bank. Sturdy shoes and winter-proof clothing are required for the hike. Hiking poles provide additional stability. The starting and finishing point of the tour is the outdoor swimming pool at Weißensee.

Hiking enthusiasts start this delightful winter tour at the outdoor pool and walk clockwise around the Weißensee. Right at the beginning there are breathtaking views over the frozen lake of the magnificent Allgäuer and Tyrolean mountains, which now present themselves as majestic white guardians in winter. After a short while the pretty parish church of St. Walburga comes into view, whose origins go back to 12. century. It's worth taking a look at the church, whose beautiful high altar was created by Dominikus Zimmermann, who also built the famous Wieskirche. In the upper part of the high altar there is an image of the Mother of God breastfeeding the baby Jesus. A quiet garden with a climate pavilion and several benches that invite you to linger was created below the church.

The tour then continues across snow-covered meadows to the south bank of the lake. Here, hiking enthusiasts cross a quiet mountain forest where there is a lot to discover. The hikers cross small wooden bridges, pass frozen waterfalls and steep rock faces and, with a bit of luck, even spot deer searching for food. A popular photo motif is the so-called “Törle”, a small rock gate through which hikers have to walk. Also noteworthy is the 60 meter long Hugo Ludwig bridge. In places the natural rooty path is secured between rock and ice on the south bank; Some sure-footedness is still occasionally necessary. But that doesn't change the fact that this hike, which is absolutely flat, has an overall easy character and can be easily managed by families with children and seniors.

Finally, in the soothing cold winter air, you slowly return to the starting point. In between, hikers pass several particularly idyllic places that invite you to linger and enjoy the view over the glittering ice surface of the mountains. After the eventful tour, hiking enthusiasts well deserve a cup of tea or a glass of mulled wine to warm up. Various refreshment stops in Weißensee also offer Allgäu delicacies for small or large appetites.

The winter hike around the Weißensee is a lot of fun and guarantees lots of interesting holiday impressions in one of the most beautiful areas of the Allgäu. Young and old can look forward to a relaxing and varied hour and a half with her.
