Then the 16,9 km long mountain tour “From Vils to Brentenjoch” is the right thing for you. It leads along picturesque alpine meadows through beautiful mountain nature to the summit of the 2000 meter-high Brentenjoch. You are on paved paths and well-trodden paths and do not have to do any strenuous scrambling.
Wonderful natural impressions, real Tyrolean hut charm and a magnificent view of the summit – the mountain tour “From Vils to Brentenjoch” promises unforgettable impressions and lots of hiking fun. Although you don't have to walk over narrow ridges or along steep slopes, you do need to be in good physical condition and be sure-footed and have a head for heights near the summit. If these requirements are met, the hike is also suitable for sporty families with older children. For the tour you should wear hiking shoes that cover the ankle and have a good tread sole. In addition, if you have them, hiking poles are definitely recommended. The starting point of the tour is the Vilser Alm parking lot in the small Tyrolean community of Vils. The journey is initially via the A7 or the federal highways B16 and 17 to Füssen. From here you take the A7 towards Reutte and, after crossing the border, take the first exit to get to Vils.
At the end of the community, follow the signs that take you to the Vilser Hütte car park. Alternatively, you can also get to Vils from the Füssen train station with the 74 bus line in about 30 minutes. Here you get off at the Stadtgasse stop, follow the main road towards Pfronten and then turn left towards Vilser Alm. You should plan approximately 7 Stunden hiking time for this eventful mountain hike.
The tour begins at the parking lot and initially leads uphill on the road, along the Kühbach and past the Vilser quarry, where climbers can find beautiful routes, to the Vilser Alm. This managed mountain hut is at an altitude of 1226 meters and can be reached after around 4 kilometers. Here you can linger on a cozy sun terrace and enjoy all kinds of homemade delicacies such as apple strudel, cakes, soups, snacks or Kässpatzen. Meanwhile, the children have the opportunity to have fun in a large adjacent playground or to pet the alpine goats and guinea pigs. If the weather is bad, you can also stay in the spacious dining room, which has a tiled stove and can accommodate 60 people. A playroom has been set up on the first floor to keep little guests entertained. After stopping at the Vilser Alm, we continue along the road, through the ford and over the picturesque Kühbach to a forest.
Hiking in the middle of this wonderful mountain nature really puts you in a good mood, the air is soothing and pure, and you always have a great view of numerous Allgäu and Tyrolean peaks. If you're lucky, you'll come across chamois on this hike, which live at higher altitudes. The path winds in serpentines through the forest to an alpine meadow, where a path branches off to the right to Vilser Joch. At Vilser Joch the route forks and you take the right fork to hike through pine trees to the summit of Brentenjoch. The last section of the path requires a bit of surefootedness and a head for heights. Once you have finally reached the summit, you will be overcome by a feeling of limitless freedom as you enjoy the unforgettable view of numerous mountains and the vast foothills of the Alps.
The Brentenjoch is part of the Tannheimer Mountains and has a height of 2000 meters. It is connected to the Roßberg, a secondary peak 1945 meter high, via a northeast ridge. In the west is the 1985 meter high Aggenstein and the German-Austrian border runs between these two mountains. There is a large summit cross on the Brentenjoch. Once you have enjoyed the dream view long enough, you can return along the same route to the starting point of the hiking tour. Hard-core and fit hiking enthusiasts can extend the tour a bit further by hiking at the Vilser Joch to the Sebenalpe and then via the panoramic Tannheimer Höhenweg to the managed Bad Kissinger Hut. After a break with food and drink, the descent takes place via the Reichenbachklamm to the Pfronten border crossing. We finally return to Vils via Schönbichl. This option is really reserved for hardcore hikers; everyone else should hike back to Vils on the same route as on the way there.
