The 7,5 kilometer-long Bad Faulenbach-Alatsee circuit is an easy winter hike that leads through the idyllic Faulenbacher Valley, which turns into a fairytale snowy landscape in the cold months, to the mysterious Alatsee. The tour offers a wealth of beautiful winter impressions and promises an eventful excursion for young and old.
The largely car-free Faulenbacher Tal, which belongs to Füssen, is something like the city's natural spa park. There are numerous natural beauties here, such as pretty mountainside forests, impressive rock formations and six small lakes that are strung together like pearls on a string. In addition, various stations such as a Kneipp facility, a dark room or a balancing path were created here in the “Valley of the Senses” with the aim of increasing the relaxation factor. There is enough variety on the 7,5 kilometer-long Bad Faulenbach-Alatsee circuit, which takes a good two hours. The start and finish point of the winter hike, which is also suitable for families and seniors, is the Bad Faulenbach car park. Sturdy shoes and warm winter clothing are recommended as equipment. Hiking poles that provide additional stability are also useful.
The tour starts at the parking lot and initially leads gently uphill on the Alatseestrasse through the snow-covered Faulenbacher Valley. The soothing winter air and the wonderful snowy landscape prove to be a real treat for the senses. The hiking enthusiasts pass mighty snow-covered trees, idyllic meadows and several frozen lakes, such as the Mittersee and Obersee, which are popular bathing destinations in summer. At the end of the valley you reach the legendary Alatsee, which has achieved national fame as the setting for a well-known Allgäu crime novel that stormed the bestseller lists. The wintry silence that surrounds Lake Alat further reinforces the mysterious character of the body of water, which lies directly on the Austrian border and about which many regional myths are circulating. Ghosts are said to live on the banks here and mythical creatures roam around.
There is supposedly a National Socialist gold treasure hidden on the Seegrund, but no one has found it to date. From Seeufer there are breathtaking views of the Tannheim mountains, which are now covered in white splendor. A recently created bird adventure trail leads around the lake, which uses interactive showcases to introduce the local bird world in more detail.
You hike a little along the Alatsee to the hiking car park and back again. At the level of an inn that allows you to take a short break, turn right onto a hiking trail, which you follow to Obersee. Now you are in the middle of the magical winter forest and will pass several adventure stations that were created to further enhance the recreational character of the Faulenbacher Valley. These stations, such as a Kneipp facility and a balancing path, are each intended to appeal to one of the five senses in a special way. At Obersee, keep left and hike up the slope to get back to Alatseestrasse, which takes you back to the starting point of this varied winter hike. After a little more than two hours you will reach the parking lot again.
