Our picturesque Weissensee

Our picturesque Weissensee

The picturesque Weißensee, which belongs to the Ostallgäu town of Füssen, is nestled between hills, meadows and forests on the northern edge of the Alps and is a beautiful leisure destination all year round. Wonderful hiking trails lead through the dream landscape around the water, which is also very popular with anglers and, in the warm season, with bathing enthusiasts.

The Weißensee is located in the middle of the Füssen district of the same name, which is a rural climatic health resort made up of small 23 hamlets scattered between green meadows. The 2,3 kilometer long lake covers an area of 1,35 square kilometers and is located just a stone's throw from the German-Austrian border. It was first mentioned historically in 8. Century, when it and the surrounding land were given by the Frankish king Pippin to the Augsburg bishop Wikterp in favor of the St. Mang monastery cell. The city of Füssen finally acquired the Weißensee from private hands in the year 1928 . Today it is a popular recreational destination for both locals and tourists. With its clean, beautiful turquoise water, it invites you to have wonderful bathing fun on warm days. There are many lonely places on its banks that are ideal for unwinding and enjoying the fantastic view across the water of the magnificent Allgäuer mountains.

The water is also very popular with anglers due to its idyllic location and rich fish population. The Weißensee is home to, among other things, whitefish, pike, eels, whitefish, lake trout and carp. Until the end of October, anglers can fish here either from the bank or from a boat.

The Weißensee and the surrounding landscape are, above all, a paradise for hikers. The best, varied hiking trails lead through the intact nature around the Weißensee, which delights with a variety of beautiful impressions. It is particularly attractive here in spring, when the blooming dandelions transform the alpine meadows into a sea of yellow colors, and in autumn, when it is still pleasant outside but no longer so hot. To get to know the Weißensee while hiking, we recommend the approximately 9 km two-lake view circuit, during which you also pass the mysterious Alatsee, which is only 500 meters further south and has achieved national fame as the setting for some Allgäu crime novels. This varied and easy hike, which is also suitable for children, starts at the Weißensee outdoor swimming pool and leads from here to the road on the east bank.

The hikers walk towards Füssen, uphill through a forest, to the Zwei-Seen-Blick viewpoint and to Alatsee. Here the hikers follow the circular path to the road, from which they turn left to get back to Weißensee. Fantastic views of the two lakes and the mountains south of the Vilstal, the soothing mountain air here in Füssen-Weißensee and great impressions of nature make this short hike a pleasure for the senses. On warm summer days you can end it with a cool down in the Weißensee outdoor pool.

Around the Weißensee, not only leisurely walks are possible, but also more challenging hikes that lead to sights such as the Falkenstein castle ruins or to rustic mountain huts in the region. Hiking enthusiasts can, for example, extend the tour at Alatsee presented here to include a detour to the Salober-Alpe - a cozy hut that pampers its guests with delicious Allgäu delicacies on a sun terrace. Hikers, nature lovers and those seeking relaxation always get their money's worth at the beautiful Weißensee.
