The region around Füssen in Allgäu is a hiking paradise with fantastic trails for every level. In addition, renowned long-distance hiking trails meet in Füssen and 9, including the Via Alpina, which leads through all eight Alpine states on five routes. Hiking enthusiasts can try out one of the stages, which is part of the first route - the purple path - on a Allgäu holiday around Füssen. The long stage from Tegelberg to Kenzenhütte leads through the former hunting and hiking grounds of the Bavarian kings and impresses with wonderful landscape impressions.
The Via Alpina, which was brought to life, leads on five different paths with a total length of over 5000 kilometers through the eight Alpine states of Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Slovenia, Liechtenstein, France and Monaco. One of their routes is the so-called violet path, which runs between the Karawanken and the Allgäu via 66 stages through the eastern Limestone Alps. A shortened test stage of the purple path leads from Tegelberg to Kenzenhütte. It is moderately demanding and can be completed within a day. Hikers can look forward to beautiful natural impressions and magnificent views of the foothills of the Alps with its castles, mountains and lakes. The starting point of this charming hiking tour is the valley station of the Tegelbergbahn in Schwangau. The journey to Schwangau is from Füssen on the B17 towards Schwangau. The Tegelberg is signposted here. There are enough parking spaces available at the valley station.
If you use public transport, take the 73 or 78 bus line from the Füssen train and bus station to get to the Tegelbergbahn. After the tour, you take the hiking bus from the Kenzenhütte to Halblech and from there take the bus back to Tegelberg. The hiking bus runs on Saturdays and Sundays from the beginning of May and daily from the end of May to the end of October at 10.30, 14.00, 16.00 and 17.30 . Since there is no place to stop for refreshments on this hiking tour, which takes around four and a half hours, you should definitely remember to pack enough provisions.
This interesting test stage begins on the purple path of the Via Alpina on the Tegelberg in Schwangau, a striking mountain massif whose highest point is the 1881 meter-high Branderschrofen. At the valley station there is a 760 meter-long summer toboggan run and various entertainment attractions for children. Also interesting is the 1934 discovered Roman villa complex on Tegelberg, which is an impressive testimony to Roman architecture and technology. In the immediate vicinity of the Tegelberg, the world-famous castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau sit in a picturesque rocky landscape.
From the valley station of the Tegelbergbahn you first take the lift up to the mountain station. Here you will find a beautiful panoramic restaurant and the Tegelberghaus, which used to be the royal Bavarian hunting lodge of King Maximilian II. The views of the picturesque foothills of the Alps with its green meadows, idyllic lakes and magnificent mountains as well as the soothing mountain air make this hiking tour a pleasure for all the senses. The route leads towards the Ahornreitweg and Ahornsattel, after crossing which the hikers reach the Niederstraußbergsattel, where they meet the actual Via Alpina route. From here we continue on the Max-Weg to the Schwangauer Kessel, which presents itself as a colorful sea of color in spring and summer thanks to the numerous blooming flowers. Via the Kenzensattel the hikers finally reach the Kenzenhütte, located in the middle of the Ammergebirge nature reserve, in the 19.
In the 19th century it was the hunting lodge of the Bavarian kings and is now a popular excursion destination. The hut is open from the beginning of May. Then hikers can enjoy delicious Allgäuer delicacies or hearty snacks while enjoying the fantastic views over the mountains. The hiking bus then takes you down to the Bruckschmid car park in Halblech at the times already mentioned. From here, hikers take a small access road to Halblech and from the bus stop in the center of town the 73 bus takes them back to Tegelberg.
This test stage of the Via Alpina impresses with wonderful landscape impressions and panoramic views over the Allgäuer Königswinkel. Because it's moderately demanding, it's not too strenuous, so it can be completed easily with a little bit of fitness.
