Summit hike on Aggenstein and Breitenberg

Summit hike to the Aggenstein and Breitenberg

The two neighboring mountains Aggenstein and Breitenberg are the destination of this wonderfully beautiful but also challenging summit hike. The 13,2 kilometer-long mountain tour leads from the Breitenberg valley station through the Reichenbachklamm to the Bad Kissinger Hütte and from there on over the Aggenstein to the Ostlerhütte on the Breitenberg. Good fitness, a head for heights and sure-footedness are required for the hike.

A wealth of beautiful landscape impressions, wonderfully soothing mountain air and breathtaking summit views over the vast foothills of the Alps - the mountain tour to the 1986 meter-high Aggenstein and the 1838 meter-high Breitenberg is a real hiking highlight in the Allgäu. However, the tour leads over partly steep and rocky passages, so it is not suitable for inexperienced mountain hikers. You should be in good physical condition, sure-footed and have a head for heights in order to complete this hike. The starting and finishing point of the mountain tour is the valley station of the Breitenbergbahn in Pfronten-Steinach. If you are traveling with your own car, drive via Füssen on the B310 towards Weissensee / Pfronten, through the Füssen district of Weissensee to a roundabout, which you leave at the third exit to get to Pfronten. The Breitenbergbahn is signposted here. There are enough parking spaces available at the valley station.

Hiking enthusiasts who use public transport can get to Pfronten from the Füssen train and bus station with the 71 or 56 bus lines. After the mountain hike, the valley bus takes you back to the valley station from the Fallmühle, where the tour ends. The valley bus runs from 26.05. - 21.10. daily at 11.20, 14.20 and 16.20 . Recommended equipment for the mountain tour includes hiking boots that wrap around the ankle and have a good profile, as well as hiking poles for additional support. You should also pack some provisions in your backpack, even if you pass two cozy huts during the tour. At least seven hours must be planned for the hike.

The 1838 meter-high Breitenberg near Pfronten, which belongs to the Bavarian part of the Tannheim Alps, is very popular all year round with those seeking relaxation, active athletes and nature lovers. It offers hikers and cyclists varied routes that lead through a fantastic mountain landscape, hang gliders and paragliders use it as a starting point for unforgettable sightseeing flights over the Ostallgäu, and those seeking relaxation like to make themselves comfortable on the wonderful terraces of the huts here and enjoy the wonderful view of the neighboring peaks. In the cold months, Breitenberg attracts winter sports fans with a family ski area that leaves nothing to be desired. The summit hike to the Aggenstein and the Breitenberg begins at the parking lot of the Breitenberg valley station. From here you first hike past the BBB bistro and a small playground to the Reichenbachklamm.

The hiking route is signposted, but in places you have to be careful not to miss them. You cross the wildly romantic Reichenbachklamm on a narrow, partially secured path. The large waterfall is well worth seeing here. At the end of the gorge you reach a forest path that runs up to the pasture area of the Pfrontener Hochalpe and over the Grenzhütte to the Bad Kissinger Hütte. If you are not quite sure whether you have enough fitness and a head for heights to climb the Aggenstein summit, you have the opportunity to shorten the hike and go directly to the Breitenberg at several points before you reach the Bad Kissinger Hut. The Bad Kissinger Hütte, which stands on the border on Austrian territory and is 1792 meters above sea level, is reached after a total walking time of around three hours.

It is located in the middle of a fantastically beautiful mountain landscape and of course offers the opportunity to take a break with a delicious snack or enjoy a warm hut meal. The spacious outdoor seating area offers a great view of the mountains. After stopping at this rustic hut, we head up to the striking Aggenstein. This is really demanding and sometimes you have to pull yourself up the path on chains to get to the summit. Once there, you will be rewarded for your exertions with a magnificent and unforgettable view over the vast foothills of the Alps. You should definitely take your time here to enjoy this summit panorama enough to make you kneel down.

The descent is initially strenuous again as it is quite steep and leads over light scree. Finally you reach the GEO path Pfronten and the hike becomes much more comfortable. Information stations along the way provide interesting information about the geology of the region. The path leads to the Ostlerhütte on the Breitenberg, which then offers the opportunity to take a break with food and drink. The panoramic view here from 1838 meters of the Pfronten valley as well as the Allgäuer, Tyrolean and Swiss mountains is also wonderfully beautiful! At the end of the hiking tour, you go down a ridge path to the Fallmühle, from where the valley bus takes you back to the Breitenberg valley station.

Experienced mountain hikers will love the summit hike to the Aggenstein and the Breitenberg. It enchants with great natural impressions and mountain views that you will never forget. This tour is without a doubt one of the absolute hiking highlights in Allgäu.
