During the descent, this mountain tour even offers opportunities for Kneipp therapy in a picturesque mountain stream. This hiking tour is a real highlight, but also requires good fitness and sure-footedness. The summit hike to the Große Schlicke is considered moderately difficult and tests your endurance. But it also offers mountain hikers beautiful landscape impressions, all sorts of culinary delicacies in rustic mountain huts and an unforgettable view of the summit. The starting and finishing point of this hike is the Vilser Alm parking lot in the Tyrolean town of Vils. To get there, drive via Füssen on the A7 towards Reutte/Tirol and take the first exit after the border tunnel to follow the directions to Vils/Pfronten.
As you leave Vils, a path on the left leads to the Vilser Alm car park. Alternatively, you can also take the 74 bus from the Füssen train station to Vils. For this demanding mountain tour, we recommend hiking shoes with a good profile sole that wraps around the ankle. Hiking poles provide additional security. You should take some provisions with you, although there are two places to stop for refreshments on the tour. If you want to do some Kneipp therapy during the descent, pack a towel in your hiking backpack. The 14,3 km long summit hike to the Große Schlicke takes around seven hours.
From the Vilser Alm car park you walk on a wide forest path through the Alptal up to the Vilser Hut. On the way you pass the wildly romantic Alpstrudel Falls and learn interesting facts about the geology of the area on display boards, as the route runs parallel to the Pfronten Geopath for a while. After about an hour's walk you reach the Vilser Alm, which is located at an altitude of 1226 meters in the middle of the Ammergebirge nature reserve and is a popular destination for those seeking relaxation, hikers and nature lovers. The Alm has a cozy sun terrace where you can enjoy a hearty snack or delicious homemade hut meals with a view of the mountains. From May to September, an Alpine breakfast buffet takes place here every Friday, so you can try all of the delicious culinary delicacies. If the weather is unpleasant, you can make yourself comfortable in the spacious dining room with a tiled stove.
After taking a break in the Vilser Alm, continue walking along the forest path through the high valley until the path turns into a path. Through another high valley and across a meadow you then reach the climb to the Vilser Scharte. Of course there are also signs along the route that show you the way. The fresh, pure mountain air and the omnipresent, fantastic views of the wide valleys, picturesque meadows and magnificent mountains make this hiking tour a real feast for the senses. The climb to the Vilser Scharte then requires increased attention and a good level of fitness. Some passages here were secured with wire ropes and provided with iron ladders. Once you have finally reached the Vilser Scharte, you switch to the south side of the Schlicke massif, from where you can climb to the summit without much further effort.
From a height of 2059 meters you have a magnificent view of the city Füssen, the fantastic landscape and the wild north faces of the Tannheim mountains. By the way, Queen Marie, the mother of fairytale king Ludwig II, the Neuschwanstein creator, once lived on two of these impressive celestial giants. She was considered a passionate alpinist and climbed both the 2164 meter-high Gehrenspitze and the highest mountain in the Tannheim Alps, the 2238 meter-high Kellenspitze. Before you head down, you can't miss a photo of yourself next to the oversized summit cross.
On the descent, follow the directions in the direction of the Musauer Alm. In the Reintal you cross wooded sections and have to be careful, as the route is not easy to follow in places. The Musauer Alm then invites you to take a break and treat hungry hikers to a delicious snack or homemade delicacies. The Alm is a popular meeting place for young and old and is open from the beginning of June. The further descent runs past the Bärenfalle inn to Roßschläg. There are opportunities for Kneipp in the Sababach at the Musauer Alm and other places along the descent. In the middle of a fantastic mountain landscape you can integrate some wellness into this charming hiking tour. From Roßschläg the public transport line 74 takes you back to Vils.
