The starting point of the 8,5 km long summit hike to the 1680 meter high Schlagstein is the Bleckenau mountain inn, which the Bavarian King Maximilian II. 19. Century had it built as a Swiss house for his wife, Queen Marie. The relatively easy mountain tour leads through a fantastically beautiful, quite remote natural landscape in the Ammergau Alps and has a wonderful view of the summit as its highlight.
The mountain tour to the Schlagstein, which stands in a lonely corner in the Ammergebirge nature reserve, is still considered an insider tip. There are hardly any steep or difficult passages to overcome, so it is also suitable for sporty families with a bit of fitness and sure-footedness. The starting and finishing point of the hike is the Bleckenau mountain inn, which is located in 19. It was built in the century by King Maximilian II and later served as a hunting lodge for the fairytale king Ludwig II. Today the Bleckenau is a cozy mountain hut and a popular starting point for hikes in the Ammer Mountains. You can get there via Füssen on the B17 to Schwangau, where you follow the signs “Hohenschwangau / Königsschlösser”. There is parking at the Tourist Information Hohenschwangau, in the immediate vicinity of the magnificent royal castles.
Alternatively, you can get to Hohenschwangau from the Füssen train station with the bus lines 73 and 78. Opposite the Tourist Information there is a bus stop from which a hut bus runs to Bleckenau several times a day during the hiking season. Departure times include 9.00, 11.00 and 13.00 . You can obtain current information about travel times from the Tourist Information. After the hike, the bus will of course take you back to Hohenschwangau. The last descent takes place at 17.30 . For the summit hike to the Schlagstein, hiking boots with a proper profile sole that wrap around the ankle are recommended. If you have hiking sticks, you should take them with you. You need to plan around three and a half hours for the tour. On the way there is the possibility of having a snack in a small hut, but it is still an advantage to pack some provisions.
The Bleckenau mountain inn is located at 1167 altitude in the middle of the idyllic Ammergebirge nature reserve. After the hike you can make yourself comfortable on the wonderful sun terrace and enjoy a delicious snack or hut meal. But first we go on the forest road, along the Pöllat, towards the Jägerhütte. Here you hike in the fresh, soothing mountain air with a view of a picturesque landscape, making the tour a real pleasure for the senses. The route is signposted, so you can concentrate entirely on the beautiful nature and not have to worry about getting lost. After about 2 kilometers, a small ascending path branches off to the right, which leads south to a gorge over which a bridge leads. You cross a slope above the gorge and reach the open alpine pastures of the unmanaged Altenberghütte.
Where the path from the hut flows into the Pöllattal, it is possible to take a detour to the small hunter's hut, where the alpine innkeeper offers simple snacks and fresh milk during the Alpine summer. The rural Allgäuer authenticity can be experienced here with a snack like this in the middle of the wonderful natural landscape. The hike then continues on a slightly ascending path, through a small forest to the Schlagsteinsattel at an altitude of 10 meters. From here, the summit of the mountain is only around 15 minutes away. The last part of the route is a little steeper and leads between mighty spruce trees and boulders to the summit cross. Here and there, sure-footedness is required here. From the summit of the Schlagstein you will be treated to a fantastic view of the Ammer Mountains with its forests, valleys and mountains.
What is particularly impressive is the view from here of the mighty pillar, which towers next to the Schlagstein in the west. Due to its distinctive shape, the Säuling is visible from afar when traveling to the Füssen / Pfronten region. Once you have enjoyed the beautiful view sufficiently, the descent follows.
First you go back to the Schlagsteinsattel, where you turn right onto a path that leads down through the Bächwald to just before the Bächhütte. Here we continue in a northerly direction to a boggy section of landscape over which wooden planks lead. Finally you reach a forest road that takes you back to the Pöllattal. After a few minutes of hiking you arrive back at Bleckenau. Now you can relax here on the terrace and end the hike with a cold beer, a snack or a small warm hut meal. The hut bus takes you back to Hohenschwangau.
The summit hike to the Schlagstein impresses with its natural idyll, a fairly easy route and a very beautiful view of the summit. The tour doesn't take too long and is ideal for a short, sporty excursion into the Allgäu mountains.
