The Breitachklamm is the deepest rocky gorge in Central Europe and one of the most beautiful geotopes in Bavaria. It is located at the exit of the Kleinwalsertal in the town of Tiefenbach, which is part of Oberstdorf. The impressive gorge was created about 10000 years ago after the last ice age, when the melting Breitach glacier sawed through the Schrattenkalk of the Engenkopf and the Breitach river ate through the stone over the course of many years. In the warm months, the gorge, which is surrounded by vertical and overhanging rock walls about a hundred meters high, delights with rushing water spectacles, bizarre tree formations and rare plants that have found their habitat here in the humidity. In winter there is an almost tangible silence in the gorge, where massive ice curtains and glittering icicles now form a bizarre and fantastic winter wonderland. The Breitachklamm can be visited daily in winter from 9 Uhr; last entry is at 16 Uhr. Secured and easily accessible paths lead through the gorge, which can also be easily managed by families with children and seniors. However, sturdy shoes are a must. There are sufficient parking spaces in front of the entrance building in Tiefenbach.
