The best place to start a winter hike to the Schwangauer Drehhütte is at the Adlerhorst / Outward Bound car park, which you can reach from Füssen / Schwangau on the B17 by turning right behind the pretty Coloman Church into the entrance to “ Drehhütte, Rohrkopfhütte, Adlerhorst”. If you travel by public transport, get off at the bus stop in Mühlberg and reach the starting point of the tour after a short walk. In addition to sturdy mountain boots and warm clothing, you shouldn't forget a sledge; If you don't have your own, you can rent them in various sizes from all providers who also rent skis and snowboards.
The winter hike to the Drehhütte is suitable for the whole family and takes around an hour. From the Adlerhorst car park, a signposted, cleared path leads in loops up the mountain. The refreshing winter air and the magical snowy landscape make the hike a real pleasure. We head towards our destination through snow-covered forests, while along the way there are always wonderful views over the snow-covered foothills of the Alps and the large Forggensee. After around an hour, the hikers reach the rustic revolving hut, which stands in a small clearing at a height of 1250 meters and used to serve as a shelter for lumberjacks. Today the hut staff pampers hungry hikers with delicious South Tyrolean delicacies, hearty snacks and warm drinks. Everyone can warm up quickly in front of a roaring fireplace before heading out into the cold again to whiz down the adjacent natural toboggan run on the sleigh. Children and adults will have a blast.
The turning hut is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 22:00 Uhr and on Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00 Uhr. It remains closed on Monday. If you want, you can also hike further from the Drehhütte to the Rohrkopfhütte. This is reached after a climb lasting around 30 minutes, which definitely tests your fitness but shouldn't cause too much difficulty for sporty hikers. The Rohrkopfhütte, which of course also pampers its guests with all sorts of delicacies, offers a breathtaking view of the famous castle Neuschwanstein.
