The approximately 18 kilometer-long “Königstraum” mountain hike, which leads to the Falkenstein castle ruins and further to the Vier-Seen-Blick viewpoint on the Salober, guarantees fantastic landscape impressions and unforgettable panoramas in the Allgäu mountains. On the “Königstraum” hike you will get to know the Falkenstein castle ruins, which are one of the most remarkable sights in the Allgäu because of their extraordinary location and historical significance. The castle, which was built in the 19th century on behalf of the Tyrolean Count Meinhard II and was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War, is closely linked to the Bavarian fairytale king Ludwig II. The monarch was so impressed by the highest castle ruins in Germany that he bought it and wanted to turn it into another magnificent castle in the style of Neuschwanstein. However, due to his unforeseen death 1886 , this “royal dream”, which gives the hike its name, unfortunately remained unfulfilled. The starting and finishing point of the mountain tour, for which around 7 Stunden walking time must be planned, is the guest's house in Pfronten-Ried. From Weißensee you can reach Pfronten within a few minutes by car; Parking is available here at Pfronten-Ried train station.
You start at the guest's house and first hike to the Meilingen district towards Falkenstein. You walk in serpentines across picturesque pastures and through shady forest sections up the 1268 meter-high Falkenstein to the castle ruins. The soothing Allgäuer mountain air and wonderful views of the foothills of the Alps make the tour a joy from the start. On the grounds of the castle ruins there is a viewing platform from which you can enjoy a fantastic view of countless mountains all the way to the Zugspitze. In the castle museum below the ruins you will learn a lot of interesting facts about the history of the castle, which was once built on behalf of the Tyrolean Count Meinhard II as a kind of threatening gesture towards the Bavarian dukes.
From Falkenstein, the tour continues over the ridge of the “Drachenrücken” to the Vier-Seen-Blick viewpoint on the Salober. Here you have a fantastic view of the Weißensee, Hopfensee, Forggensee and Bannwaldsee, which gives this place its name. You can also see the fairytale castle Neuschwanstein from a unique perspective before you continue hiking and follow the signs to the Salober Alm. The hut, surrounded by lush green mountain meadows, is a popular excursion destination in the region and ideal for a long break. From Wednesday to Sunday you will be treated to homemade cakes, Bavarian snacks and warm Allgäuer dishes on a beautiful sun terrace.
The last part of the tour, in which you hike from the Salober Alm to the town of Vils, takes you past the Vilsegg castle ruins, which tower high above the Vilstal. The mighty keep of the medieval complex has still been preserved. In Vils you take the path along the river of the same name back to Pfronten. If your legs are already feeling tired, you can easily get back to Pfronten with the Ausserfernbahn. In any case, you have a wonderful day of hiking behind you, which had many interesting impressions and unforgettable panoramas to offer.
