The Allgäu Mountain Farming Museum in the Diepolz district of Immenstadt is an open-air museum located above 1000 meters in altitude, which shows the development of rural life in Allgäu. The museum is an excellent excursion destination for the whole family, who can learn, discover and have fun while looking out over the Allgäu Alps.
The Allgäuer Mountain Farming Museum in Immenstadt-Diepolz promises interesting, eventful and enjoyable holidays for young and old. The open-air museum, located over 1000 meters in an idyllic mountain landscape, shows the development of rural life in Allgäu from the times of flax cultivation, through the emergence of the dairy industry, which is so important for the region, to modern agriculture. In addition to various stations such as a "walk-in cow's stomach" or the historic saddlery farm, which provide a lot of interesting information about the life of the Allgäu mountain farmers and agriculture in the region in general, there is also a herb garden and a mountain farm where numerous old animal breeds such as mountain sheep, the Allgäu brown cattle and Swabian-Hallian pigs are at home.
On the museum grounds, children have the opportunity to run around in playgrounds, jump in the haystack or watch educational and entertaining films in the children's cinema. A historical museum alpine provides interesting insights into the everyday life of the alpine dairymen and also invites you to stop and enjoy delicious snacks made from fresh ingredients. During their stay, visitors walk through lush green meadows and can enjoy the breathtaking view of the panorama of the Allgäuer Alps.
One of the highlights in the Allgäu Mountain Farm Museum is the “walk-in cow stomach”, a project that was funded by the Bavarian State Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry, among others. In a wooden hut, the entrance of which is funnily designed like a cow's mouth, there are several interactive stations that illustrate how a cow's digestion works and how the delicious Allgäuer milk is produced. A core project of the museum is the historic farm, which provides interesting insights into everyday work processes such as feeding, milking, mucking out and turning the animals out to pasture. Old breeds of domestic animals can be admired and petted here, and children can romp around and jump around on the farm's hay rack between 3 and 10 Jahren. Speaking of hay: From May to October 2016 , the special exhibition “Hoibat” shows the strenuous summer hay work in the Allgäu mountains in the form of black and white photographs and exhibits.
The courses offered regularly in the museum promise a special experience. For example, participants can make their own cheese in the Sattlerhof, learn how to make butter or, as before, bake in the wood-burning oven and enjoy the freshly prepared bread at the end. “Natural foot care”, guided herbal fairytale hikes for adults and the production of rose and lavender cream are other topics on which courses are offered here. Everything you need to put into practice what you have learned in the courses at home is available in the museum shop, which also offers beautiful Allgäu souvenirs, toys for children and regional products.
The Allgäu Mountain Farm Museum, which also has a play area for small children and a changing room and whose building can be accessed with strollers, is open daily from 20 March to 06 November 2016 from 10:00 to 18:00 Uhr.
