This great hike on the Saloberkamm guarantees lots of wonderful holiday impressions. You will get to know the highest castle ruins in Germany, which fairytale king Ludwig II once wanted to turn into a magnificent castle, and enjoy fantastic views of the Tyrolean and Allgäu mountains as well as the vast foothills of the Alps. Towards the end of the 10 kilometer-long tour, which is suitable for anyone in good physical condition, we head to the Salober Alm, one of the most popular mountain huts in the area. The starting and finishing point of the scenic circular tour, which should take around four hours, is the Breitenbergbahn car park in Pfronten-Steinach.
At the starting point, simply follow the path marked “Zirmgrat” to get to the Falkenstein to the castle ruins. On the way you will be treated to a variety of natural impressions within the fascinating mountain landscape. Shortly before the ruins you will pass a beautiful Marian grotto with larger-than-life figures of the Mother of God and St. Bernadette, who are located here in a niche in the rock. The 1280 Falkenstein Castle impresses above all with its spectacular altitude. It was built on behalf of the Tyrolean Count Meinhard II, who sent a clear threatening gesture to the Bavarian dukes with whom he was then fighting over the Staufer inheritance in Ostallgäu. After the castle shared the fate of the nearby Hohenfreyberg and Eisenberg castles towards the end of the Thirty Years' War and was destroyed, Ludwig II bought it 1883 in order to have a magnificent castle built in the style of Neuschwanstein in its place. However, his death 1886 prevented this plan. During renovation work a few years ago, a viewing platform was built inside the castle, which offers an unforgettable 360-degree view of the picturesque Vilstal and the Tannheim mountains.
After your tour of the castle ruins, take the asphalt road here to hike down to the saddle in front of the Einekopf. From here, simply follow the signs to the Salober Alm, which is located at a height of 2.5 meters above the mysterious Alatsee. The hut's dream location and the range of homemade Allgäuer and Tyrolean delicacies make it a popular excursion destination. Have a great time in the Salober Alm, which is open every day except Mondays, and enjoy the delicious delicacies on the sun terrace with a view of the foothills of the Alps. If you come to the hut during rest periods, there is at least a vending machine with soft drinks on the terrace. After stopping at the hut, continue walking downhill towards Vils, then turn right a little later and follow the signs “Zirmenweg – Mariengrotte”. This will take you back to the starting point.
