For fans of Nordic walking, the approximately 7,5 kilometer long Calvary circuit is highly recommended when staying in Füssen-Weißensee. This varied tour leads from the idyllic Füssener district of Bad Faulenbach over the spectacular Lech Falls to the Kalvarienberg, which is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the area.
The gentle endurance sport Nordic walking originally comes from Finland, but has now found many fans in this country too. That's no wonder, because Nordic walking is one of the healthiest sports of all and is also a lot of fun. Especially if you walk through a wonderful landscape, like the approximately 7,5 kilometer long Calvary circuit presented here. Due to its length and some climbs, this tour, which takes about an hour and a half, is of medium difficulty. However, if you are in good physical condition, it can be completed without any problems. The starting and finishing point is the parking lot opposite the mini golf course in Bad Faulenbach. This is located at the end of Alatseestrasse.
First you walk along the Alatseestrasse through the idyllic Faulenbacher Valley towards Lechfall. The Faulenbacher Valley is a largely car-free natural jewel with pretty mountain slope forests, species-rich flower meadows and six small lakes that are lined up here. Via the Fischhausweg and Schwärzerweg you get to the Lechfall, over which the 1895 XQPH0QXbuilt König-Max-Steg leads. On the footbridge you can take a close look at the approximately twelve meter high waterfall, which creates a spectacular natural spectacle. Rushing masses of water plunge into the depths and enter the Lech Gorge, which was formed by the meltwater of the Lech Glacier during the last Würme Ice Age about 12000 years ago. Worth seeing is the bust of King Maximilian II, which is located in a rock niche above the gorge.
Once you have reached the other bank of the river, you now walk a wide loop through the wooded Ziegelwies. Beautiful natural impressions and the soothing air make the tour a real pleasure. On the Königsstrasse you finally reach the Kalvarienberg, which rises opposite the old town and gives this route its name. After the climb, you will have an unforgettable view of the vast foothills of the Alps and the old town of Füssen from the summit. The world-famous castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau can also be clearly seen from here. The descent leads along the Stations of the Cross past fourteen station chapels, which were artfully designed and remind us of the suffering of Christ. The dungeon chapel and the Lady Chapel with its larger-than-life figure of the Virgin Mary are particularly worth seeing. The Füssener Calvary, which combines religion, art and nature, also invites non-believers to pause at the stations, enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and let their thoughts wander. Ludwig II, the popular fairy tale king, used to enjoy traveling to the Füssen Calvary.
After descending from Calvary, it is not far back to the starting point, which you can reach after about an hour and a half of total walking time. Now it's a good idea to play another round of mini golf on the beautifully designed course, which opens its doors daily from 13 Uhr from Easter to October, weather permitting. The complex also includes a beer garden, which invites you to take a leisurely break after sporting activities. The Kalvarienbergrunde really promises the best enjoyment of nature and lots of fun.
