The 22,6 kilometer-long Dreiländereck tour is a relatively easy mountain bike tour that leads from Füssen, along the royal castles, to the Dreiländereck to the summit of the Schwarzenberg massif. The tour impresses with attractive sights along the way and wonderful panoramic views over the picturesque foothills of the Alps.
The Dreiländereck tour is particularly recommended for ambitious mountain bike beginners and occasional riders who are looking for a nice tour where they can get to know the wonderful Allgäu landscape and the sights of the Königswinkel. However, the tour also has a tough climb that requires a bit of fitness. On the way back, the Schluxen estate invites you to take a break, which the Bavarian fairytale king Ludwig II used to visit frequently. The starting point of the 22,6 km long triangle round trip is the Tourist Information in the Füssen city center. Allgäu Holidaymakers arriving from outside can reach Füssen via the A7 or the federal highways B310, B16 and B17. There is a paid parking garage P5 “City/Sparkasse” very close to the Tourist Information. You can park for free in Füssen, for example, in the P2 “Federal Performance Center for Ice Hockey” car park, which is around a quarter of an hour’s walk from the starting point of the tour. If you use public transport, you can get to the Tourist Information from the Füssen train and bus station in around 5 minutes. You have to allow about an hour and a half for the border triangle circuit.
Mountain bikers get on their bikes at the Tourist Information Center, which is located in the Füssen city center. The romantic Füssen old town enchants with its medieval character and all sorts of old buildings worth seeing, such as Gothic houses and historic churches, which are lined up along narrow streets. Numerous cozy restaurants and cafés invite you to linger and spoil your guests with delicious regional delicacies. After the tour there is still enough time to stop by and see for yourself. First we go along Sebastianstrasse towards Schwangau. A cycling and hiking trail runs parallel to the B17 and leads to the royal castles in Hohenschwangau. These stand in the middle of a magical rocky landscape and once served as the home of the Bavarian kings. Above all, Neuschwanstein Castle, which is reminiscent of a magnificent medieval castle from the outside and is sumptuously furnished, is one of the most famous sights in Germany.
Every year, well over a million people from all over the world come to Neuschwanstein to immerse themselves in the romantic world of the fairy tale king Ludwig II. The two castles can be visited in the form of a guided tour lasting around half an hour. At the intersection in Hohenschwangau, the mountain bikers turn right and head to Alpsee, which was considered Ludwig II's favorite bathing lake. Here you go past the parking lot on the right, up Fürstenstrasse. A little later a path branches off to the left that leads up to the border triangle.
The climb to the border triangle is quite tough and requires a bit of stamina and fitness. For the most part it runs on the asphalted Fürstenstrasse, but after the German-Austrian border the bikers have to turn right onto a forest path. The border triangle is located on the summit of the Schwarzenberg massif and offers a dream view over the vast foothills of the Alps with its castles, mountains and lakes. This unforgettable panoramic view alone makes this tour extremely worthwhile. According to a legend, there was once a triangular table here on the summit where the rulers from Bavaria, Tyrol and the Bishopric of Augsburg met and conferred. After the bikers have enjoyed the great view, they return to the border and ride in serpentines down the mountain to the Gutshof zum Schluxen, which is located on Austrian territory. Clean driving technique is an advantage here in order to master this descent well.
At the Gutshof zum Schluxen you will then take a break with food and drink before heading back on a tarred road via Unterpinswang towards Füssen. Before the Tiroler Straße intersection, mountain bikers turn left onto a cycle path that follows the course of the road and leads them to the Füssener Lechfall. The König-Max-Steg leads over the impressive waterfall, where the water plunges down to a depth of up to seven meters over several steps. It's worth making a stop here and taking a look at this natural spectacle. Then we go over the Theresienbrücke into the Füssen old town. In front of the venerable Benedictine monastery of St. Mang - which is worth a visit - the mountain bikers turn right to get back onto Sebastianstrasse, which leads back to the Tourist Information. After the eventful Dreiländereck tour, it's now time to take a leisurely stroll through the old town and discover interesting buildings and other attractions at every turn.
