The town of Füssen is a real paradise for cyclists with many great routes for every fitness level that lead through the beautiful Allgäu foothills of the Alps. Numerous long-distance cycle paths also converge in Füssen, including the Romantic Road cycle path. We would like to introduce you to the stage from Füssen to the Wieskirche near Steingaden, which impresses with numerous scenic and architectural highlights along the way.
The Romantic Road is the oldest and probably most popular holiday route in Germany. It runs over a length of 413 kilometers from Würzburg to Füssen and is traveled by millions of tourists from home and abroad every year. Along the route there are areas with varied landscapes such as the Taubertal, the Nördlinger Ries and the Allgäu Alpine foothills. There are also numerous sights along the Romantic Road such as the Würzburg Residence, the Fuggerei Augsburg, the Wieskirche and the royal castles. Cyclists can discover the Romantic Road on a long-distance cycle route, most of which runs along side roads with little traffic and comfortable cycle paths. The last stage of this popular long-distance cycle route leads from the Wieskirche near Steingaden to Füssen. Below we will introduce you to a 55 kilometer-long bike tour to get a taste of the Romantic Road, where you cycle from Füssen to the Wieskirche and back.
On this tour, which is ideal for leisure cyclists, you can look forward to wonderful landscape impressions and attractive sightseeing highlights, so that a successful day on the bike is guaranteed. The start and finish point is the Tourist Information in Füssen. If you are traveling by car in Allgäu, you can park your car in the P5 “City / Sparkasse” car park, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the starting point. Travelers using public transport can reach the Tourist Information from the Füssen train and bus station in 5 minutes.
You get on your bike in front of the Tourist Information in Füssen and start rolling in an easterly direction. After crossing the Lech, you drive via Alterschrofen to Hohenschwangau in the village of the royal castles. The two world-famous castles Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein face each other here in the middle of a picturesque mountain landscape. Both buildings can be visited daily in the form of a guided tour lasting around half an hour. In particular, Neuschwanstein Castle, which was commissioned by the fairytale king Ludwig II, delights millions of people from all over the world every year with its magnificent architecture and interior design. The tour continues past the idyllic Bannwaldsee, which is perfect for swimming in summer, and through small towns such as Bayerniederhofen, Halblech, Trauchgau and Schober into the Upper Bavarian “Pfaffenwinkel”. Near Steingaden is the magnificent rococo-style pilgrimage church on the Wies, or Wieskirche for short, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most popular sights in Bavaria.
After you have visited the Wieskirche, you first drive back on the same route as on the way there. Now there are no more sights waiting for you on this tour, but you can concentrate entirely on the wonderful Allgäu foothills of the Alps with its green meadows and forests as well as magnificent mountains. At Bayerniederhofen you turn right to go via Kühberg and Greith to Forggensee, the largest lake in the Allgäu. Here you follow the course of the Forggensee cycle path, which leads directly along the shore back to Füssen. From June to mid-October, two passenger boats operate on the lake several times a day and also transport bicycles, so there is the option of ending the tour with a boat trip.
