The Royal Schwarzenberg Circuit is a bicycle tour that follows in the footsteps of the fairytale king Ludwig II through the beautiful Allgäu around Füssen. The starting and finishing point of the 16 kilometer-long bike tour is the Tourist Information in Füssen. You can get to Füssen via the A7 motorway or the B16 or B17 federal highways. Parking is available in the P5 “City / Sparkasse” car park in the immediate vicinity of the Tourist Information. Allgäu travelers who use public transport can reach the Tourist Information from the Füssen train and bus station in just about 5 minutes on foot.
At least 2 Stunden should be planned for the Royal Schwarzenberg Circuit, which should preferably be competed between April and October. If you want to visit the castles and the forest adventure center in between, the bike trip will of course take much longer.
Cyclists leave at the Tourist Information Füssen and follow Sebastianstrasse towards Schwangau. After crossing the wildly romantic Lech on the König Ludwig bridge, we go via Altenschrofen to Hohenschwangau. In front of the Village of Royal Castles, you cycle past the Schwanseepark, which is the royal castle park Hohenschwangau, which was commissioned by Maximilian II and laid out in the style of an English landscape garden. Here in the Schwansee Park, through which wonderful walking paths lead on several floors, Ludwig II once learned to ride. In spring and summer, the meadows in the park are transformed into a blooming, colorful sea of colors thanks to numerous, sometimes rare, flowers and plants. In Hohenschwangau you can marvel at the dream castle Neuschwanstein, which sits enthroned in a picturesque mountain landscape opposite the Museum of the Bavarian Kings and Castle Hohenschwangau.
The castle, built on behalf of Ludwig II in the style of a magnificent knight's castle between 1869 and 1886 , attracts well over a million visitors from all over the world every year and is considered the symbol of romanticism par excellence. The impressively decorated halls, furnished with valuable art treasures and expensive furniture, come together to form a harmonious whole that regularly amazes and awes visitors. The cozy residential castle Hohenschwangau, in which Ludwig II spent much of his childhood and youth, is also well worth seeing. Both castles can be visited in the form of a guided tour lasting approximately 30 minutes. Tickets for this are available at the ticket center on Alpseestrasse.
At the beginning of Fürstenstraße it is worth taking a detour on foot to the Pindarplatz viewpoint, from which you have a great view over the Alpsee and the foothills of the Alps. The Fürstenstrasse, on which Ludwig II used to ride his illuminated sleigh in the past, leads cyclists to Schluxen. There, the Schluxe inn offers the opportunity to take a leisurely break with a delicious snack. King Ludwig II also liked to visit this inn together with his mother Queen Marie. The Royal Schwarzenberg Circuit then takes cyclists further in the direction of Pinswang to the Ulrichsbrücke. Shortly behind this, turn left to cycle on a cycle path that follows the course of the Lech and leads to the Ziegelwies Forest Adventure Center. Young and old can have lots of fun in the great outdoors on exciting themed and educational trails as well as an impressive treetop walk.
The forest adventure center is one of the most popular family excursion destinations in the area and provides an understanding of the forest habitat in a playful way. On the cycle path on Tiroler Straße we continue to the impressive Lechfall in Füssen. This offers an impressive natural spectacle in which the water plunges over seven meters into the depths to flow into the Lech Gorge. You can get a great view of this spectacle from the König-Max-Steg, which leads over the waterfall. In a niche above the gorge is the beautiful royal bust of Maximilian II, the father of the fairy tale king. After crossing the Theresienbrücke, the cyclists finally return to the starting point of this eventful tour.
