Connoisseurs, families and e-bike riders who would like to take a nice, easy bike tour through the beautiful Allgäu Alpine foothills around Füssen should consider the 27,9 km long Zirmgrat circuit. This bike tour takes you past charming sights such as the Lech Falls and the Falkenstein castle ruins, around the long Zirmgrat mountain range in the southwest of Füssen. Towards the end of the tour there is the opportunity to enjoy a wonderful cool down in the turquoise waters of the Weißensee.
The picturesque Allgäu Alpine foothills landscape, with its wide green meadows and idyllic valleys as well as soothing mountain air, is perfect for leisurely bike tours. Numerous flat or gently hilly stretches at the foot of the mountains lead through this postcard idyll. A highly recommended bike tour is the 27,9 km long Zirmgrat circuit, where families, leisure cyclists and e-bike riders can get to know their holiday area better. It runs along attractive sights such as the Falkenstein castle ruins and the Lechfall, and also has a highlight for children in the Ziegelwies forest adventure center. At the end of the bike tour, the Weißensee invites you to have refreshing bathing fun on warm summer days. The starting and finishing point of the Zirmgrat tour is the Tourist Information in Füssen. The journey to Füssen is via the A7 motorway or the federal highways B16 and B17.
Paid parking spaces are available in the P5 “City/Sparkasse” car park, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the Tourist Information. There is free parking in the P2 parking lot at the Federal Ice Hockey Performance Center, which is about a 15 minute walk from the starting point of the tour. If you use public transport, you can reach the Tourist Information from the Füssen train and bus station in 5 minutes on foot. It is best to do the Zirmgrat tour, for which you should plan around 3 Stunden, between April and October.
At the Tourist Information Füssen, cyclists cross Sebastianstraße to cycle along Klosterstraße to Spitalgasse. This takes you to the Theresienbrücke, which leads over the wild and romantic Lech. After crossing the bridge, turn right onto Tiroler Straße, which leads past the Lechfall and a little later the Ziegelwies Forest Adventure Center. You should stop for the first time at the Lechfall to go to the König-Max-Steg, from which you have the best view of a natural spectacle at its finest. Roaring masses of water flow here over several steps down to a depth of seven meters to enter the Lech Gorge. Above the gorge in a niche is the royal bust of Maximilian II, the father of fairytale king Ludwig II and builder of castle Hohenschwangau, embedded in the rock. The next stop at the Ziegelwies Forest Adventure Center is particularly recommended for families with children.
This popular excursion destination impresses with, among other things, exciting themed and educational trails, a large adventure playground and an impressive, almost 500 meter long treetop path that leads 20 meters above the ground from treetop to treetop. The forest adventure center allows young and old to have entertaining hours and also raises awareness of the forest habitat.
Shortly after the main building of the forest adventure center, a gravel path branches off to the right, which leads over the German-Austrian border to the Ulrichsbrücke. At the Kirchsteg near Pinswang we cross the Lech again before the cyclists cycle through the beautiful Tyrolean Vilstal to the town of Vils. Here, behind the parish church, the street “Untertor” branches off to the right, which leads to a bridge, after crossing which the cyclists turn left onto the Zirmenweg, which takes them towards Pfronten. Above Pfronten-Meilingen, Germany's highest castle ruin sits on a rocky outcrop of the Falkenstein. Due to its exceptional altitude, the Falkenstein castle ruins are considered an impressive symbol of power and dominance in German castle lore. Count Meinhard of Tyrol once had the castle built as a conspicuous symbol of power against the rival dukes of Bavaria. Fairy Tale King Ludwig II bought it in 19. Century to turn it into a castle in the style of Neuschwanstein. Only his unexpected death prevented this plan. On the grounds of the castle ruins there is a wooden viewing platform from which you can enjoy a dream view over the vast foothills of the Alps.
In Pfronten, cyclists take the Panoramaweg, the Achweg and the König-Ludwig-Weg into the wooded Finstertal and then via the towns of Benken and Roßmoos to the idyllic Weißensee. Follow the riverside path clockwise to pass the Weißensee outdoor pool, which invites you to have wonderful fun in the turquoise water on warm days. On the northern lake circuit is the worth seeing church of St. Walburga, whose artistic high altar comes from Domenicus Zimmer, who was responsible for building the famous Wieskirche. Where the circular route ends, cyclists turn right onto a road and after a parking lot on the left they come to a cycle path on the left that leads back to Füssen.
