The 42,5 kilometer-long mountain bike tour through the royal castles to the Füssener hut is more suitable for experienced mountain bikers with a good level of fitness. It leads from the picturesque Füssen city center, past the world-famous royal castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, to the Tyrolean Reintal and delights with wonderful landscape impressions and breathtaking views of the magnificent mountains.
The tour over the royal castles to the Füssener hut is one of the absolute highlights here in the Allgäuer Königswinkel for experienced mountain bikers. It requires a good level of fitness and offers some tough climbs, but also inspires with beautiful landscape impressions and unforgettable views of the local mountains. Several cozy huts along the route also provide a variety of culinary delights. Mountain bikers should plan around 6 Stunden there and back for this tour and take sufficient drinking supplies, money for refreshments and of course a helmet. The starting point of the mountain bike tour is the Tourist Information in the Füssen city center. You can get to Füssen via the A7 motorway or the B16 and B17 federal highways. In the immediate vicinity of the Tourist Information is the paid parking garage P5 “Federal Performance Center for Ice Hockey”. Free parking is available in Füssen in the P2 “Federal Performance Center for Ice Hockey” parking lot, which is approximately 15 minutes from the tour starting point. If you travel by public transport, you can reach the Tourist Information from the Füssen train and bus station in around 5 minutes.
The tour starts at the Tourist Information, which is located in the picturesque Füssen city center. The mountain bikers first follow Sebastianstrasse towards Schwangau and then follow the cycle path that runs along the B17 to get to Hohenschwangau. Here are the world-famous royal castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau in the middle of a magical mountain landscape. Millions of people from all over the world come to Hohenschwangau to marvel at the two magnificent buildings. In particular, Neuschwanstein, which was created between 1869 and 1886 on behalf of the fairy tale king Ludwig II, is a sightseeing highlight at its best. It takes you into the medieval world of legends and fairy tales, for which Ludwig II had a great passion, and delights with its magnificent interior and romantic ambience, which even prompted the Disney studios to use it as a model for their Sleeping Beauty Castle.
But the cozy residential castle Hohenschwangau, which is directly opposite, is also well worth seeing. At the intersection in Hohenschwangau, mountain bikers turn right to Alpsee, which is one of the cleanest lakes in Germany. Here you go past the parking lot and turn right up Fürstenstraße. At the next junction, the bikers turn left onto an asphalt path that runs steeply uphill to the German-Austrian border. At around 1000 meters in altitude you reach a gravel path that leads in serpentines down the mountain to the Gutshof zum Schluxen.
The Gutshof zum Schluxen is located on Austrian territory and was once a popular stop for the fairytale king. Mountain bikers can take a break here before continuing on to Unterpinswang. After you have crossed the village, you cross a cycle and pedestrian bridge on the left that leads over the Lech. The tour then runs along the Reuttener Landstraße, through Reutte, to the Bärenfalle car park in Musau. Here, to the right of the parking lot, a gravel path leads up to the Musauer Alm. The climb is quite steep and tests the bikers' fitness, but it also runs through a wonderful landscape in the Tyrolean Reintal. Shortly before the mountain bikers reach the Musauer Alm, they have a fantastic view of the steep north faces of the Tannheim Alps. From the Musauer Alm a path leads along above the Saba stream to the Füssener hut. Here, bikers can relax on the cozy terrace and enjoy delicious snacks and homemade hut dishes with a view of the Tannheim mountains.
After stopping at the Füssener hut, we head back, which goes steadily downhill. It initially follows the same route to the bridge near Unterpinswang. After the bikers have crossed this, they turn left towards Füssen. Before the Tiroler Straße intersection, turn left onto the cycle path, which leads you to the Füssener Lechfall. Here it is a good idea to leave the bike for a moment and step onto the König-Max-Steg, which runs over the waterfall. From there you can marvel at the natural spectacle up close, in which the water plunges down several meters and steps. The mountain bike tour then continues over the Theresienbrücke into the Füssen old town. In front of the St. Mang Monastery - one of Füssen's most famous sights - the mountain bikers turn right to return to Sebastianstrasse and the Füssener Tourist Information. After the tour, you can take a leisurely stroll through the old town, where there is something interesting to discover at every turn.
