It begins at the boat harbor in Füssen with a boat trip on the Forggensee, then leads a bit through the Ostallgäu foothills of the Alps and finally runs along the western shore of the Forggensee. Anyone traveling by car in Allgäu can park directly at the boat harbor on Weidachstrasse. Travelers using public transport can reach the starting point of the tour from the Füssen train and bus station in 10 minutes by bike. It is recommended to complete the tour between June and October, as the ships on Lake Forggensee only operate during this time frame.
Together with your bike, you board one of the passenger ships that leave here several times a day from the Füssen boat harbor and take a boat trip of around one hour to get to the Roßhaupten power plant stop at the dam. The boat trip on the Forggensee is one of the most popular in all of Bavaria and offers wonderful views of the Füssen old town, the royal castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau as well as the Allgäu mountains. Before you get on your bike at the dam, you can visit the information center in the E-ON hydroelectric power plant, where you can find out a lot of interesting information about the creation and use of Lake Forggen, the largest reservoir in Germany. The bike tour runs on the Forggensee cycle path through the picturesque foothills of the Alps towards Buching. Via the towns of Thal, Ostern, Prem and Gründl we go to Lechbruck, where the rafting museum is worth a visit and provides information about the former Lech rafting industry.
From Lechbruck, cyclists follow the actual Via Claudia Augusta cycle route to Roßhaupten and continue on the Forggensee cycle path along the western bank of the largest Allgäu lake. By the way, the original Via Claudia Augusta route leads directly through Lake Forggensee. In winter, when the reservoir has been drained and the bottom can be walked, traces of the original route can still be discovered here and there.
